Treason and the New York Times: a matter of public interest

Under a program begun shortly after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, the Treasury Department began retrieving financial information from a Belgium-based banking consortium that maintains a global banking database, in order to track down the financing of terrorist operations. Thus far this initiative has proven rather effective in tracking down several well known terror suspects and stymied their schemes. Divulging this method of tracking down the terrorist’s financial shenanigans was a story New York Times Editor Bill Keller felt was a matter of public interest.

Zarkawi’s life and death: a meaningless tale told by an idiot

When I first saw the clip of Abu Musab Al-Zarqawi fumbling with a machine gun and soliciting help from an extra to unjam the gun I thought it had to be one of the funnies videos I had seen in a long time. My first thought was that if people waited long enough, it would not take long before the liberal media pundits started castigating the U.S. armed forces for poking fun at the colorful terrorist, and lamenting that we have come to such a state where we feel we can make fun of the hapless jihadist’s blunders. How Iran Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb

Meet Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the Supreme Leader of Iran. That is a title you get if you beat the world record of most pancakes eaten in one sitting, currently held by David Williams from Kansas. Which is why the Ayatollah had to go a different route and get it by being elected in 1989 by the “Assembly of Experts”, a body comprised of the wisest Mullahs in the neighborhood that decide who will be the next Big Kahuna, with authority to override every other member of the Iranian government, and the last word on many of that country’s foreign policy decisions. To put this in the vernacular, in terms of spiritual hierarchies this means that God is the guy who drives the roach coach from which the Supreme Leader’s administrative assistant gets his cup of coffee in the morning.

Soldiers and the media. A most unlikely marriage.

Imagine that you make a choice to enlist in the army. You have a profound sense of commitment to the cause of freedom, and as a patriotic American who deeply loves his country you rightfully see enrollment in the armed forces as one of the loftiest venues through which you can fulfill your calling.
