Divine revelation bequeathed the Church the responsibility to honor and cherish life. The latter then wisely embraced this mission as a foundational principle upon which to justify the need for its own existence in a fallen world. Thus the call by the President of Notre Dame University to invite President Barack Obama to give the annual commencement address was a source of profound disappointment to many of the faithful. Even more dismaying was the announcement that the Rev. John Jenkins would also bestow President Obama an Honorary Doctorate Degree in Laws at the same ceremony.
